The Literature and Culture of the Harlem Renaissance Prerequisite:LAC student with T1A, T1LT, T1H or T1SS course. The Harlem Renaissance, or "New Negro Movement," which spanned from approximately 1917 to the mid-1930s, was a cultural explosion that changed the course of African American literature, music, art, and intellectual thought. It brought together a wide range of artist and intellectuals who sought to bear witness to the complexity of the African American experience during a time in which most avenues to publishing and performing were owned and controlled by whites. In this course, we will focus on the problems of representation, audience, and artistic freedom as well as the effects of racial, gender, and class discrimination as we study the work of key artistic and political figures from the period.
