DNC 240 - West African Dance I
West African Dance I
Prerequisite: LAC student with T1A or T1LT course or ELAC student

NOTE: There is a $50.00 fee for this course.

This course is an exploration of various dance sytles, forms and rhythms attributed to the classical societies of Western Africa. Aesthetic qualities of African dance will be explored through video, readings and performance. This course will focus on dances whose origins trace back to the Old Mali Empire (i.e. Mali, Senegal and Guinea), with an emphasis placed on dances and rhythms from Guinea. The course will emphasize the process of developing African dance technique(s), the execution of steps and phrases and the rudiments of the choreographic process. A basic understanding of rhythym and polyrhythm (syncopation) will be reinforced through warm up activities, across floor work, and group collaboration, culminating in a performance at the end of the semester.
