ECE 355 - Tchng & Assessment of Reading
Reading And Writing In The Primary Years
Prerequisite:Admission To The Teacher Education Program

An examination of reading development, pedagogy, and assessment from birth to grade three. A comprehensive approach to the teaching of reading includes careful focus on all areas of reading development including areas of early literacy such as phonological and alphabet awareness, concepts about print, early writing, and oral language. Comprehension, strategy-use, fluency, word study, and phonics will be explored with an emphasis on developing readers' meta-cognitive skills. Research based teaching practices such as shared and guided reading, reading conferences, and word-study groups will be explored as ways to teach aspects of reading in meaningful, integrated contexts. Heavy emphasis will be placed on the assessment of reading as Running Records, comprehension retellings, interviews, and checklists will be implemented and analyzed.
