EDU 237 - Encoding Electronic Texts
Re-Presenting Books: Encoding Electronic Texts

This course provides an introduction to creating digital representations of textual sources that originally appeared in print or manuscript, while also exploring some fundamental questions for literacy, cultural, and media studies (e.g., "What is a book?"). Thoughtfully encoded electronic texts provide a basis for varieties of computer- assisted analysis that can complement traditional practices of close reading by revealing broader patterns that emerge across large bodies of texts. The practice of marking up texts for digital delivery and analysis also draws students' attention to questions of structure, form, and meaning in very concrete ways that complement the kinds of interpretive reading they pursue in other classes. The class provides a practical introduction to the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) Guidelines, a specificiation widely used not only in Humanities research, but also in libraries and museums, and so can prepare students for advanced work in the digital Humanities, as well as internship or career opportunities in libraries or cultural heritage institutions.
