MUS 318 - Music & Narrative
Music & Narrative
Prerequisite: MUS 205 or permission of instructor.

Music & Narrative is a course about the relationship between music and storytelling in the nineteenth century. The course not only explores what types of stories were valued through music of the period (narratives of (anti-) heroism, tragic death, transcendence, nationalism, etc.) but also examines how such stories were means of expressing contemporary ideas about musicianship, individuality, and society and investigates the complex issues of interpretation raised by different types of narrative works and their historical contexts.
