American Theatre
Prerequisite: None

This course positions theatre as a social institution from colonial times to the present, through the analysis of performance alongside aesthetic and social-scientific methods. Topics include theatre's relation to democracy and national, group and individual identity, the economics of theatre production and consumption and the rise of "celebrity culture", and the ways representational modes reflect and shape individual perceptions and social realities.
