In this course, we will study the art and architecture of Europe from the end of the Roman Empire through the vibrant Gothic era, illuminating the so-called "Dark Ages." Through close study of objects and texts from the Middle Ages, we will engage with critical issues and themes, such as the role of different religions, art and political power, the body and sexuality, global trade and cultural interaction, and art and science. Since the study of the past can cast the present in a new light, you will also explore medieval resonances in the images of today's world. How does the way we see medieval Europe reflect our view of the world today?

In this intensive course the students will examine theoretical aspects of drawing, color and painting methods as well as complete practical exercises in which they will need to observe, document, and reflect. The students practice visual exploration and creative problem solving through repeated exercise, with variety of medium and techniques. Students enrolled in this course will take up a summer residency in a city outside of the United States that has a rich history in art and culture of the host country. Change of place and creating art daily in response to the new environment imports a new strength to the mind. Students will have a dedicated studio time and frequent field trips for the duration of this course and develop a creative thought process through research, exposure, and dialog. Each art work produced in this course will be the result of students' research skills in the context of their own creative practice in a new setting. All physical projects will be collected and turned into a portfolio. There is additional cost to students for this course.

Senior Seminar in Studio Art II
Prerequisites: LAC student with at least two Tier II courses or ELAC student. Permission of Instructor and Chair.

ART 485 Senior Seminar in Studio Art II, is a continuation of ART 475 Senior Seminar in Studio Art I. Students will complete an advanced studio project and an artist's statement and reflective essay in the area of Painting & Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture or Illustration. The final studio project will present at the conclusion of the term and exhibit at the Gallery. The project will demonstrate the ability to engage in independent inquiry and creative activity. In addition to their studio explorations, students will develop skills in discussing and presenting their work and portfolio and expand their understanding of professional practices and career options. Students will work under the supervision of a Studio Art faculty member in their focus area, but will also receive critical feedback and input from a group of faculty members representing a variety of concentrations.

This course is designed to provide senior level students with an opportunity to practically apply a variety of knowledge and skills acquired in New Media Studies. The course allows students to examine their learning and critical thinking in a real-world context through the creation of their senior project. This project will demonstrate the ability to engage in independent inquiry and creative activity. Students will work under the supervision of a Digital Art & Design faculty member in area of concentration.
