The structure and function of organisms is the focus of this course. After a passage through the clade of living organisms, we consider the basic problems faced by all living organisms and compare the diverse solutions that have evolved among bacteria, archaea, protists, chromists, rhodophytes, plants, fungi, and animals. The fundamental concepts include: cellular structure, homeostasis, growth, movement, behavior, reproduction, and evolution. Laboratory exercises involve both observation of and experimentation with living organisms. This writing-intensive course provides up to 2 points toward the 8 points required to meet the university intermediate writing requirement for biology major and minor programs. Course must be completed with a grade of C- or better. This course may not be taken concurrently with BIO 130 without the express written consent of the Biology Department Chair or designee. Course topics include the movement of energy through ecosystems, species interactions, population dynamics, and human impacts on other organisms and the environment. Topics will be presented within an evolutionary framework, drawing on connections to human experience as well as other sub-disciplines of biology. Special emphasis will be placed on critical evaluation of scientific information, the scientific method and ecology as a scientific enterprise.

Students in this course will participate in the process of science, through a variety of hands-on investigations in ecology. Activities will be designed to teach key scientific skills such as observation and measurement, manipulation and control of variables, graphical analysis, and the formulation of alternative hypotheses. Elementary statistical concepts will also be explored, via simple spreadsheet analyses. Students will apply scientific principles of experimental design and data analysis to problems drawn from ecology, as well as from everyday life. This course is intended to provide an accessible and relevant hands-on laboratory experience for non-majors, which, together with BIO 200 (Ecology And The Environment), will fulfill their LAC Tier 1 requirement for Natural Science with Laboratory.

This course is designed to introduce students to the field of genetic counseling which exists at the intersection between genetics, psychology, statistics and medicine. Genetic counselors advise clients on genetic risks for certain health conditions and provide counseling and support related to those risks. The course will cover the definition of genetic counseling, common specialties and careers in genetic counseling, principles of inheritance, taking medical and family histories, constructing pedigrees, basic counseling and interviewing techniques, tenets of genetic counseling and ethical, legal and social issues in genetic counseling.

Basic botanical topics taught will include plant cells, anatomy, life cycles, mineral nutrition, transpiration, and photosynthesis. Specific Cannabis aspects will cover methods of cultivation, including hydroponics, pest management, light selection, seed selection, Cannabinoid production, harvest, and marketing. Two additional overarching themes that will be topics of discussion throughout this course will be: Cannabis and its relation to social justice, and the environmental impact of Cannabis cultivation.

This summer course provides biology majors with an introduction to herpetology, the study of amphibians and repiles. An emphasis is placed on evolutionary patterns and processes, through which we examine how organisms interact with the biotic and abiotic components of their environment. Additionally, we consider how these interactions shape the diversity and distribution of amphibian and reptile assemblages from local to global scales. We also consider the relevance of amphibians and reptiles to other applied branches of biology, including conservation and invasion ecology. During our laboratory sessions, we use standard field techniques to survey and analyze the diversity of herpetofaunal communities throughout Connecticut.

Prerequisites: BIO 380 (B or better), GPA 2.0, Instructor's Permission

The student formulates the project idea with the ECSU faculty mentor. The student is expected to carry out an independent project, write a comprehensive report to the faculty mentor, and present the results of the study at an appropriate venue.

Honors students conduct independent research under the guidance of Departmental Honors Committee and a faculty supervisor. The research will lead to the completion of the Honors Thesis.

The student assists in the instruction of a laboratory course. Responsibilities include preparing and cleaning-up of instructional materials for laboratory, assisting with orientation and instructions to students in the class, and serving as role model, mentor, and tutor for students.

BIO 494 - Supervised Field Experiences
Supervised Field Experiences
Prerequisites: GPA 2.0 or Better and Permission of Instructor

The student in consultation with an ECSU faculty mentor, finds a supervisor with an external agency (physician, staff scientist, veterinarian, forester, etc.) to support and guide the student's project. With advice from the faculty mentor and agency supervisor, the student prepares a proposal for the field experience. This proposal should indicate the nature and amount of work to be done and the method for evaluation of the project by supervisor and mentor. This proposal is submitted to the department chairperson. The number of credits allowed is determined by the mentor and department chairperson. A written paper or seminar presentation of the project is an expected outcome for the field experience.
