An introduction to the topic with a historical overview of discoveries leading to photographic technology; from the earliest to current digital imaging. This course is for an absolute beginner but is also information rich for students with experience. Lab demonstrations focus on the properties of light and exposure, learning to exploit available light conditions for portraiture as well as studio lighting for copying flat art-work. Comprehension of visual perception skills regarding light conditions. Digital camera function regarding ISO sensitivity, exposure controls, White Balance and use of shutter and aperture controls for creative expression, are covered in lecture and hand-on lab activities. Composition theory and visual communication are emphasized at the start of the semester and throughout.

Students will explore media aesthetic variable - light and color, space, time and motion, and sound - involved in the production of media messages under contextuallistic aesthetic perspectives (Sewey, Pepper and Aett1). The systematic examination of these fundamental aesthetic elements will provide students with an understanding about the importance of evaluating art within its historical and cultural contexts. Special attention will be given to film and video as art as they use the same aesthetic elements as all other art forms. In addition, students will be introduced to basic aesthetic theories and approaches and their principal adherents: objective (Plato and Aristotle), subjective (Hume), and realism and formalism theories.

Selective aesthetic and digital media production readings and class discussions about media production models and techniques. Involves students in individual inquiry and group dynamics in the management of a digital media production project in a real-world context. We will explore and critically analyze past and current traditional and new media productions, such as classic films, computer animated features and video games, with special emphasis in deconstructing and understanding their aesthetic manipulations, their technical solutions, and ultimately their production values will be explored.
