We analyze neorealism, the cinematic movement that influenced the idiological and aesthetic rules of film art, e.g., DeSica's Ladri di Bicicletti (Bicycle Thief), then focus on the talents and legacy of the great auteurs who were directors- writers-producers and lead actors. These titans inspired the art cinema of the 60's and 70's, including Fellini's La Dolce Vita, Antonioni's Bolw-up and Pasolini's Medea. We conclude with the work from the 70's and beyond, paying attention to films that parallel socio-economic and political issues fo the times: Cinema Paradisco and Ciao, Professore! Also, we touch on the Spaghetti Western genre in Un Pugno di Dollari (Fistful of Dollars) and the bittersweet comedy/drama, La Vita e Bella (Life is Beautiful).
