The objective of this course is to introduce students to the works of major writers from Francophone areas, namely North and Sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, and Canada, and to the cultures of these regions. A careful reading of the works at home will lead to an in-class discussion and analysis of themes, characters, setting, and style that will shed light on topics and issues particular to these areas including: religions and beliefs, polygamy, women's condition, feminism, exile, colonialism, traditions, corruption, and violence.

Study of the development of first and second language (L1 and L2) in young children (birth through puberty). Includes infants' abilities at birth, pre-linguistic development, the first words, and phonological, syntactic and semantic development. Study of the major issues in L1 and L2 acquisition theory, such as the critical period hypothesis. Comparison of various theoretical models of acquisition for L1 and L2. Consideration of social and cultural factors affecting language acquisition.
